Dominica -- The Nature Island. The view from Castle Comfort Lodge
Connie at Melville Hall airport after just getting off the American Eagle flight that brought us there.
Sunset view from our room.
Having breakfast at the Castle Comfort lodge. All the guests dine together, and you get to meet some great people.
This picture was taken from the end of the dock at Castle Comfort Lodge. The dive shop is directly below room #15
the balcony of our room at the Castle Comfort Lodge. Room 15 It was definitely worth a little extra money to reserve it.
This is a picture of the main building at Castle comfort lodge, taken from the roof of the building with the dive shop in it. The two story part is where the guests eat, the three story part contains more guest rooms.
A woman in Soufriere making little rolled chocolate things that are used to make a local chocolate tea. It tastes very different from the chocolate that we are used to.
View of Scott's Head from Scott's Head Pinnacle.
The "Sea Hunter" fishing boat, on the shore at Scott's Head.
Two boys in Roseau who were very interested in our walkie talkies.
Hats for sale in Roseau.
Chuck up in a Rasta Tree in the botanical gardens in Roseau. What an easy tree to climb!
This flower may have been in Dominica, or it may have been in El Yunque rain forest in Puerto Rico. I don't remember. Pretty, huh?
Some schoolgirls waiting for their turn at "rounders", a baseball-like game played with a giant ping-pong paddle. This was in the Botanical Gardens in Roseau.
Connie holding Reggie, Jenny's baby. Jenny works as a waitress at the Castle Comfort Lodge, and lives just down the road in New Town, which is on the way to Roseau.
Jenny and her son Reggie relaxing on their porch.
I asked this fireman if I could take a picture of his fire truck. He nodded and walked over to stand stoicly beside it.
Chuck sending email from the Cornerhouse Internet Cafe in downtown Roseau. They charge just $4 EC for 15 minutes on the internet. Fast connections too!
This boys school in Roseau was having some sort of cricket game between the faculty and students. It was a very loud and excited group of spectators as well!
This man was walking by the Castle Comfort Lodge carrying a chainsaw. Looks painful.
A lady and her baby in Roseau. They were very friendly.
A view down into Titou Gorge from the trail that leads to the boiling lake.
Our group in the bus headed for Trafalgar Falls and Titou gorge. The life preserver was used to pull weak swimmers further into Titou gorge than they would have made it alone. We got almost everyone to the base of the waterfall.
Heading south on the dive boat toward Scott's Head. The man next to Connie is Tom Anderson, photographer extraordinaire from Chicago.
Gearing up on the boat headed south for soufriere pinnacles.
Connie hovering gracefully over a coral head. Notice that there are no bubbles. Now I know why she always comes up with so much air!
Connie swimming past some tube sponges
Three tube sponges.
A yellow Seahorse wrapped around a crinoid, which looks like a plant but is really an animal.
An Orange-ball Corallimorph. These rare members of the Sea Anemone family only come out at night, and retract quickly from any form of light. I suprised this one with my flash and a macro kit.
A Christmas tree worm that I caught on a night dive with a macro framer.
A sea horse clings to a piece of coral
A green Anemone
A lizard fish on the bottom next to a giant brain coral.
Another Seahorse
Connie sitting on a rock at the "breakfast creek", on the boiling lake tour. This spot is reached after only about 45 minutes of hiking. We had already eaten breakfast, so we didn't stay long.
Coy working his way up the steep trail on the way to the boiling lake!
One of the many scenic overlooks on the boiling lake hike.
Climbing the mountainous trail enroute to the boiling lake.
Adrienne entering the Valley of Desolation, Boiling lake hike
Boiling lake from the half-way point of the hike. This is a 2x zoom shot. It's really farther away than it looks!
Our group on the mountain top halfway to Boiling lake. You can just see the steam from it in the background on the left.
View from the mountaintop halfway to the boiling lake.
Adrienne and Steve descend into the Valley of Desolation.
Connie crosses the White River, which flows out of the Valley of Desolation.
The boiling lake. It's hard to get a decent picture of it because of all the steam.
another picture of the boiling lake. The promontory on the right is where we ate lunch. We were warned to be careful and not get too close to the edge...if it caves in and you go in the lake....you're not coming back out.
Connie relaxes in the hot tub at Castle Comfort after a long hike to the boiling lake.
Connie and Lambert, the guide that took us to the boiling lake. He was in fine form the next day, we felt like we'd been shot out of a cannon!
Market day in Roseau is on Saturday Morning. For some reason they don't like it when you take pictures of them, so I had to shoot this picture surreptitiously.
A local kid that was goofing around on the dock at the Castle Comfort Lodge. I told him I'd put his picture up on the internet where millions of people could see it!
A boy on the dock at Castle Comfort Lodge.
The sunset in Calibishie on the night of March 28th. Note the swimmer in the water.
Full moon rising over Calibishie.
